TikTok Ban Looms as House Passes Legislation

Congress Renews Threat to Popular App

TikTok Expresses Disappointment

House lawmakers have once again passed legislation that could lead to a nationwide ban on TikTok, renewing a massive threat to the popular social media platform. The bill, if enacted, would give TikTok roughly five months to separate from its parent company, ByteDance, or face removal from app stores in the United States.

In response to the proposed ban, TikTok released a statement expressing disappointment over lawmakers' decision. The company argued that the legislation is being used as a cover for important foreign and humanitarian assistance.

The first attempt to ban TikTok was made in March 2024, when the House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced a bill calling for the app to cut ties with ByteDance or face a ban. That bill was ultimately not passed by the full House.

The latest bill, which has been passed by the House, would require TikTok to sell itself or face a ban by March 2024. The bill now moves to the Senate, where it is uncertain whether it will pass.

TikTok is one of the most popular social media apps in the world, with over 1 billion monthly active users. However, the app has faced scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers over concerns about its ties to China and the potential for user data to be used for national security purposes.
