Dilation And Curettage A Comprehensive Guide

Dilation and Curettage: A Comprehensive Guide

What is Dilation and Curettage (D&C)?

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a surgical procedure that involves dilating the cervix and scraping the lining of the uterus (endometrium). It is used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

Diagnostic Uses

A D&C can be used to diagnose a variety of uterine conditions, including:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Miscarriage
  • Endometrial hyperplasia or cancer

Therapeutic Uses

A D&C can also be used to treat various uterine conditions, such as:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Incomplete miscarriage
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine polyps

Procedure Details

A D&C is typically performed in a hospital or outpatient surgery center. It involves the following steps:

  • The cervix is dilated using a series of instruments.
  • A curette, which is a spoon-shaped instrument, is inserted into the uterus.
  • The lining of the uterus is gently scraped away.
  • The removed tissue is sent to a laboratory for analysis.

A D&C usually takes 15-30 minutes to complete. Most patients are able to go home the same day. Recovery time typically involves rest and over-the-counter pain medication.
