England football manager: A brief history

From Walter Winterbottom to Gareth Southgate

Walter Winterbottom: The first England manager

Walter Winterbottom was the first official manager of the England football team. He was appointed in 1946, after the Second World War. Winterbottom's tenure lasted for 16 years, during which time he led England to the 1950 FIFA World Cup and the 1954 FIFA World Cup. He also managed England to victory in the 1953 British Home Championship.

Alf Ramsey: The World Cup winner

Alf Ramsey succeeded Winterbottom as England manager in 1963. Ramsey's most famous achievement was leading England to victory in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. He also managed England to victory in the 1968 European Championship.

Bobby Robson: The nearly man

Bobby Robson was England manager from 1982 to 1990. Robson came close to leading England to success, but he never quite managed to win a major tournament. He did, however, lead England to the semi-finals of the 1982 FIFA World Cup and the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

Sven-Göran Eriksson: The foreign coach

Sven-Göran Eriksson was the first foreign coach to manage England. He was appointed in 2001, and he led England to the quarter-finals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the 2004 UEFA European Championship. Eriksson's tenure was also marked by controversy, and he was eventually sacked in 2006.

Gareth Southgate: The current manager

Gareth Southgate is the current manager of England. He was appointed in 2016, and he has led England to the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the final of the 2020 UEFA European Championship.
